Tzeit hakochavim

Zmanim Briefly Defined and Explained - Jewish Calenda

  1. Tzeit Hakochavim - Nightfall: The point when 3 medium stars are observable in the night time sky with the naked eye. This time is the beginning of night for all mitzvahs, including the Torah obligation of reading the evening Shema, counting the Omer, the end of fast days (except for Yom Kippur) and matters relating to the laws of Family Purity
  2. The clearest statement on the matter is that of Shmuel in Gemara Shabbat 35b; once three medium stars are visible in the sky it is considered night. This time period is called Tzeit Hakochavim, the emergence of the stars. Though, there are multiple Gemaras that comment on the time span between sunset and Tzeit HaKochavim

When Does Shabbat End? - Halachipedi

Many observances in Jewish law must be performed at specific times during the day. The calculation of these halachic times, known as zmanim (Hebrew for times), depends on the various astronomical phenomena of the day for the specific locale According to the Vilna Gaon, tzeit hakochavim occurs shortly after sundown, whereas according to Rabbeinu Tam, tzeit hakochavim does not occur until much later Welcome to Beth El Synagogue's ShulCloud Member Log In Page! Candle Lighting First, when Chachamim name evening as the critical moment, it can refer to sunset (shekiat hachama) or to nightfall (tzeit hakochavim). Second, there is a dispute between Rabbeinu Tam (cited in Tosafot, Pesachim94a s.v. R. Yehuda) and the Vilna Gaon, Biur HaGra, Orach Chaim261:2, regarding the actual time of tzeit hakochavim 05 - The Time to Recite Keriat Shema Begins at Tzeit HaKochavim. The time to recite the evening Keriat Shema is when you lie down - when people lie on their beds to sleep, which starts when it gets dark. The Chachamim established a sign for the beginning of this time, when three medium-sized stars can be seen in the sky

However, this year there is room to be lenient to allow the first shift to accept Yom Tov early and make kiddush following davening. Ideally, the first shift should be sure to eat a kzayis of bread in the sukkah after tzais hakochavim. However, if it is necessary to begin the second shift before tzais hakochavim, one may be lenient to complete the meal entirely before tzais hakochavim
